Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the role of the ICO in relation to new UK adequacy assessments


After leaving the EU, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport now has the power to enter into independent UK data adequacy agreements with new partners around the world to make it easier for organizations to send data internationally .

The Secretary of State and the Information Commissioner agreed on this Memorandum of Understanding, which recognizes the roles and responsibilities of the DCMS and the Information Commissioner’s Office in carrying out adequacy assessments.

The UK government intends to add to the list of suitable travel destinations in line with our global ambitions and commitment to high data protection standards. This will give UK organizations and international partners simpler and more secure mechanisms for international data transfer.
