A major cryptocurrency exchange joins the moment of moving to Miami.
Blockchain.com, whose digital platform enables users to buy, sell, and trade Bitcoin and other digital currencies, announced that it is moving its US headquarters from New York to Magic City. By doing this, the company hoped to create up to 300 jobs over the next 18 months and pay an average salary of $ 110,000.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez announced the move from City Hall on Thursday morning along with Peter Smith, CEO of Blockchain.com. Blockchain.com is among the top 15 largest cryptocurrency exchanges by number of weekly visitors, according to CoinMarketCap.com, which tracks stock market performance.
“There have been some who questioned the impact crypto is having in transforming our economy into a technology-driven economy,” Suarez said. “I would tell them this, how many companies like Blockchain.com are getting into this market and hiring hundreds of people in that salary range? … It’s because of this crypto movement.”
The announcement comes as Bitcoin2021, which is billed as the largest crypto conference ever, is set to begin in Miami. There were other Miami-related announcements from the crypto world earlier this week, including the creation of a $ 25 million startup mutual fund and the launch of new, city-specific crypto coins.
Beyond crypto, the city continues to see a stream of companies in the tech space and beyond announcing a presence or investment in Miami. A desire to escape winter weather, less restrictive pandemic regulations, and aggressive advertising by Suarez have sharpened Miami’s profile as a technology center in ways that previously seemed out of reach.
A Miami city spokesman said blockchain does not receive financial incentives.
In a statement, Smith said: “We are honored to join the Miami business community with a strong relationship with the local government. The internet will be the largest economy in the world by 2030, and crypto is the financial system designed to support it. The city of Miami recognizes the potential of the industry and we look forward to contributing to Miami’s rich innovation ecosystem. ”
