WILLISTON – The city of Williston has announced that it will now accept payments in digital cryptocurrency for utility bills.

“We have partnered with BitPay, the largest virtual payments merchant that partners with Microsoft and Facebook.” said Finance Director Hercules Cummings. “We are the first community in the state of North Dakota and the third in the nation to offer this service.”

Currently, electricity bill payments are the only bills that can be paid using cryptocurrency. Quality assessments are performed and volume assessed before migrating other bills such as landfills, permits and licenses, according to the city.

Paying with cryptocurrency saves costs as BitPay charges a 1% fee for online payment, compared to a 3% fee for other online payment services.

Individuals can set up a digital wallet directly with BitPay or through another service such as Coinbase or Binance. a
